We delight in welcoming you to our home and into our family. It will be fun learning your culture and customs and will share ours with you, if you’d like. Our former guests are like family to us. We keep in touch and have visited them in our travels. Our guests have come from these countries: Italy, France, England, Germany, Kenya, Uganda, Egypt, Iraq, Afghanistan, China, Philippines, Japan, Thailand, Australia, Mexico and Canada.
We have hosted since 1992 and taught a weekly course - American Culture and English Language - to international students and scholars attending the University of California, Berkeley. We enjoy learning from others and sharing our home.
Having fun, laughing and enjoying good food are some of our favorite things to do. I love to cook and welcome learning cuisines from your culture. My meals are well balance and always include a healthy portion of fresh fruits and vegetables, carbohydrates (usually potatoes, rice and/or breads), and protein (beef, pork, chicken, fish, shrimp, tofu). I love to bake so there are always treats for dessert or snacks.
My husband is a retired pilot and currently works in San Francisco in technology. I am currently a student working towards a second career. I love gardening, decorating, sewing, cooking and painting. We both love being outside, watching/participating in sports, hiking, camping and going to local events and festivals.
Alameda is an island in the San Francisco Bay with draw bridges connecting to Oakland. We are centrally located to everything in the Bay Area; San Francisco, Oakland and the train system that is called BART travels to many other cities, including Berkeley. There are bus stops just 250 feet from our house and Uber/Lyft are also readily available for transportation. I am willing to help you understand our transportation system including traveling with you, if needed at first, so you feel comfortable and understand how to get around. Street parking is available if you own a car. There are many beaches, restaurants, bars, shops, a movie theater, parks, events, fairs and concerts within walking distance from our home.
Your privacy is our desire, but we are available if you have questions or need help. Our past guests considered us as “mom and dad” and we keep in contact with them, but that is also your choice. House rules are simple and we are flexible; respect our home, treat one another as you would like to be treated, relax and enjoy your stay in the beautiful Bay Area. We welcome you to enjoy our home and community. References from our former guests are available at your request.
