You are welcome to our home! We are a family of 5 plus in-laws in a large, beautiful 6 bedroom home near Great Oak High School. Our children go to Elementary school and High School nearby. I am an ex-ESL instructor, lived abroad (three years in Taiwan and four in Japan) teaching ESL. I'm currently a full-time PhD student in education at USD and work there as an Instructional Designer. My wife is a nurse at a San Diego hospital. My mother-in-law lives with us and helps us with cooking and the children. We are an American family and English is the primary language in our home, and yet we are mixed culture too. My wife is Filipino. We eat both American food like spaghetti, corn, fried chicken, but most meals have rice as a basic ingredient.
We feel we would be an ideal family for a student who is interested in both American and Asian cultures, or an Asian student who might already be comfortable in both. I can speak conversational Mandarin Chinese and basic Japanese, but English is my preferred language nowadays. ; )We belong to a nearby community center with large pool, community center and exercise center.
We are open to supporting up to 2 female students, LONG TERM interested in attending school for the 2020-2021 school year. The students would share a private room with a large closet, bunk beds, desk, ceiling fan, TV and meals.
What we provide:
-guardianship (release required from the parent(s) for any student under the age of 18).
-a supportive, caring and welcoming environment where student(s) can study and interact with an American family to advance their language acquisition.
-transportation to and from school and some school-related activities for each high school student to schools within 5 miles of home.
-utilities, washer/dryer privileges (laundry soap provided)
-breakfast and dinners, Monday through Friday. Breakfast, lunch and dinners on weekends
-all bedding, linens, and complete sets of bath towels
-free street parking for those that drive their own cars. Other transportation available: Uber, Lyft, and public transportation for those over the age of 18.
-No smoking permitted on property, and no overnight guests.
-We are looking for respectful, honest, dedicated high school students.
What we require:
-Student(s) to be respectable and courteous toward each person in our home. You will become part of our family and the activities within our home, it's the best way to increase your English language skills!
-Student(s) to be responsible to launder own clothes and own bedding.
-Student(s) will maintain and clean own bedroom and shared bathroom on a weekly basis.
-Homestay fee is due to the host in cash/US dollars at the commencement of each month. (Ex. move in date: June 1st, rent due the 1st of each month).
-Late fee: $25 per day.
-$250.00 room deposit required for damage, breakage and cleaning; is refundable if room is left in good condition.
-Quiet hours are from 10:00pm to 9:00am.
Looking forward to inviting you into our home! - Jeff and Rea Simmons
