My husband and I have accommodated Japanese homestay students on and off for the last 16 years. We have had very good experience with our different students who were attending school to study English and some were independent - working on vizas and/or for companies training without pay.
We have 2 extra bedrooms now that our 4 children are grown and are open to 2 friends or family members staying with us. We treat our homestay students like family and initiate them into the culture of California as well as conversing with them in English; our students are usually studying English as a second language.
Recently, we decided that we would rather not do the evening meal as it restricts us when we visit our grandchildren and have to be home to cook an evening meal during the week and at weekends.
We have 7 grandchildren ranging from 1 1/2yrs. old to 17yrs. old. They are frequent visitors to our house as we babysit and also go to many sporting games to support them - our students have also joined us too and have accompanied us to family birthday parties and other envents.
The students can feel free to use the kitchen and all amenities. Costa Mesa in California is in Orange County and central to many attractions including miles of sandy beaches -Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, within easy reach of Orange County Airport and the city has many bus routes. Disneyland is 14 miles away (30 minutes by car), Los Angeles and Hollywood (45 minutes drive) and San Diego (lhr. 20 minutes away).
In Costa Mesa there are many Japanese Restaurents, Japanese grocery stores, Japanese book and video stores and an influx of Japanese people who have settled or are on student programmes as there is a very big College called Orange Coast College in the city, the biggest College west ofthe Mississippi. University of Irvine, Vanguard University, Chapman University to name but a few are within reach by car. Some students bike to the nearest schools until they get used to the roads and progress to renting or buying a car after taking their Driver's Licence.
Our house is a 4 bedroom house, 1 1/2 bathrooms) on a large lot- functional with mosty lawn and fenced. It is clean and functional; accessible to major roads, freeways and bus routes.
Both my husband and I relocated from London, England 32 years ago and raised our children here in California.
Hopefully, 2 boys or 2 girls who are friends and don't want to be separated when they arrive in California might be interested to stay together. The rooms are separate and we ask them to speak in English most of the time so that the benefit from the environment.
Our track record has been good and some students have stayed 2 years with us and come back to us and visited us.
Our main influx of students came from 'The Language Institute' in Newport Beach, it was taken over by another School in San Diego and due to the recession did not prosper so our source of students has been eliminated.
Please feel free to email me or call if you have students who might be interested to stay with us.
Thank you for the opportunity of offering ourselves as Host Parents.
