Welcome to all students reading this note. My husband and I are English and relocated to Orange County, California in 1979. We love it here and have raised 4 children who are in their 30's; we have 7 grandchildren: 3yrs. to 19yrs (another on the way in August 2013). We have been 'Host Parents' for over 16 years and have accommodated mostly students from Japan/Korea ( we are open to any enquiries from students in other countries). We have enjoyed our experiences with our students and treat them like family. We are willing to accomodate two friends who want to stay together, especially if studying at University. We ask students to speak in English in the house to increase their language skills. Orange Coast College is 15-20 minutes by bus and 7 minutes by car and is in Costa Mesa. University of Irvine (UCI) is 15 minutes in the car and 40 minutes on the bus with one bus transfer (change). If you have a Driver's Licence you can take a written test (part one) in English or the language you speak (Japanese or Korean) then pass the actual driving test on local roads here. Road Signs and Codes excellent. We live in between two Beach Cities: Newport Beach and Huntington Beach, both less than a mile from our house. Costa Mesa is a busy city with lots of shops/restaurants, Performing Arts Theatre, South Coast Plaza Shopping Center, fifteen parks, many denominational churches, movie theatres, libraries and minutes away from the other cities. John Wayne Airport also known as Orange County Airport is 12 minutes away. Costa Mesa is a policed city which is good for residents and we feel protected. We look forward to email communications from any students. Please do not feel intimidated by the long introduction, we help our students with English conversation and make it fun. Our grandchildren love all students. Presently hosting a male Korean student attending Orange Coast College and hoping to transfer to University of California- Los Angeles (UCLA) or University of Southern California located in Los Angeles (USC), very prestigious universities. I am a very busy grandmother involved with my grandchildren, attending school functions, sporting events at the weekends so if a student wants to be independent and not have meals that would make life easier, some ask for the room with all amenities (except phone line) and include and breakfast only. I try to be flexible and accommodate students with a discount for less services. Most important to us is that the student doesn't feel homesick and can relax and have some freedom to experience American way of life with a protective eye on him/her, from our point of view, as we are Host Parents. If you decide to use the Shuttle let us know so that we can inform them of Airline, flight Number and time of arrival at the ?# Terminal which is important for anyone meeting you there.
